The Patriots emerged almost by accident (literally) in late 1930, in an attempt to rectify the deficiencies of the ex-London & North Western Railway Claughton 4-6-0s and became one of the most successful LMS designs of the pre-Stanier era.  Although the design is generally credited to Henry Fowler, only the first two prototype engines were built while he was Chief Mechanical Engineer; the other 50 engines were ordered after he retired and were built during William Stanier’s chieftainship.
