The Gorton Locomotive Works, Manchester, had a long and proud history of railway engineering. From the days of the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway who started construction of the complex in 1847, through the ownership of the Great Central Railway, the London & North Eastern Railway and then British Railways many fine locomotives were turned out concluding with the EM2 electrics for the Woodhead Route. Within this volume David Gosling, who began his working life as an apprentice at Gorton, describes the growth of the works, the locomotives produced and the various ‘shops’ in which parts were cast, machined and assembled. Other more unknown aspects of the works are also covered such as the canal depot. The majority of the views of the works have not been previously published and the whole is a fitting tribute to the thousands of men who worked within Gorton’s walls and of the products that they produced.
