Opened in 1898, the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway ran for 19 miles from the North Devon coast and across challenging moorland terrain. The unusually narrow gauge of 1ft 11½in was chosen to ease the railway's sinuous passage across the wilds of Exmoor. However, the line's first life was to be short-lived. The Southern Railway Company took over the near-bankrupt line in 1923, closed it only twelve years later and put its rolling stock and equipment up for auction.
